I, also have a newly laid ceramic tile floor in my second floor bathroom. The tile makes scrunching noises in over half of the floor and the grout is crumbling in many of the joints. I also think the double wax ring on the toilet has failed as evidenced by the blistering paint in the ceiling board and recessed light, below. Please give me your thoughts.
What Causes New Tile Grout To Crack Eggs
As stated above, if the floor is installed over a wood substrate and not placed in a staggered pattern with gaps and not fastened properly floors with ceramic tile installed over them can squeak. If the floor has too much deflection that grout can crack among other things.
Normally if you have a crunchy sound something breaks so I would expect to see the tile cracked. A tile can crack if the adhesive holding it down has voids and that spot gets subjected to a heavy load. Although perhaps there is a wood substrate beneath the tile and maybe the plywood has internally collapsed causing the sound. Or maybe there is some other kind of underlayment or membrane that has collapse in some way. Of course if it collapsed I would expect the tile to sink down to some degree. The only way to know for sure is to remove the tile and look for evidence to determine what caused the noise and what you need to do to remediate the problem.
The loud noise is likely due to not having movement joints at the perimeters of the tile installation and that the tiles are constrained. Tiles that are constrained and then expand from heat or moisture can cause them to debond. If in fact the tiles have debonded, I would expect that eventually the grout around those tiles will crack.
The crackling noise is a symptom of the problem and not the problem itself. Generally speaking when tile floors make noise as you walk on them it is because either the plywood substrate might internally be unstable or the backer board has gaps between it and the wood subfloor.
If the grout is cracking that might be an indication that there is excessive deflection in the floor. For ceramic porcelain tile installed over wood subfloors the deflection cannot be greater than L/360 (L = Length measured). For natural stone the deflection cannot be greater than L/720. An engineer would have to evaluate the floor and do the calculations to determine the design deflection of the floor.
If the floor is deflecting that might be why the floor is making noises. Or the plywood subfloor might be unstable and making noises. If there is excessive deflection then the repaired grout lines will likely crack again.
My tile floor in bathroom is right at 29 yrs old. Getting crunchy sounds on tiles in front of vanity. Concrete subfloor. Grout color fine and no cracking. 2 recent changes had cold weather 17 degrees but house heated above 63 degrees. Had new counter top of quarts installed. Had Formica before. No signs of any water leak.
Do you need to fix some tiles? You can do tile repair in many ways, but the most common is by using epoxy grout. This will fill any cracks and holes found in the tile and make it look new again! The process of fixing tile is not difficult at all.
An exception: If your stovetop is covered in raw eggs and these raw eggs have hardened while you were cooking (think: drips while you were making French toast, messy splatters while you cracking shells, etc.), just leave it be for now. As soon as the stove cools, let a wet dish cloth sit on the splatters for 10 minutes or so, and then simply scrub it off with a dishrag.
We are in California and have found piles that I worry are from termites. But the piles we have are a much darker, blacker color than your photos online. We have seen these along the base of our front windows and now along the edge of our bathtub where there are cracks in the grout. Any thoughts?
Grout is an important aspect when it comes to the integrity of tiled floors and walls. Designed to keep the tiles in place while warding away water and other liquids from gathering underneath the tiles, grout acts as both glue and protection. The main cause of grout damage happens when the sealant barrier is worn away, leaving the grout to absorb liquid and harsh chemicals. Grout is porous which means that without a sealant, it will essentially work as a sponge. Wet grout will quickly deteriorate leaving chips and bare patches in grout lines.
Floor patch materials come from a variety of manufacturers and are used to obtain the required plane for tile installations. This includes filling cracks, voids, rough surfaces, and low or depressed areas.
Once in place, their function is to disconnect the tile surface from the substrate to help eliminate cracked tile. Uncoupling membranes may also act as a waterproofing membrane and function well in equalizing vapor pressure conditions encountered in young or newly placed concrete.
Unfortunately, some not-so-well-trained or poorly informed tile placers (not tile mechanics or installers) mistakenly believe that whatever is in the back of the truck or leftover from the last job is appropriate to patch the low or high spots. This is entirely wrong!
This implies that you must wait for it to dry before grouting; much of this can be affected by the amount of thinset, low or high humidity, or working in cold weather. All this and more can affect how long before grouting tile surfaces is possible.

If the grout looks dirty, clean it with a brush and an all-purpose cleaner or tub, tile and sink cleaner. For badly stained or mildewed grout, use a mildew stain remover or a solution of 3/4 cup of chlorine bleach in one gallon of water. Carefully apply the bleach solution, using a brush. Rinse thoroughly
Cover the cracked tile if necessary to protect it from foot traffic and leave the paint to dry overnight. Some hairline cracks are almost unnoticeable. If this is the case, you might not need to apply the primer and paint.
Dip a narrow paintbrush or a toothpick into the epoxy and dab the epoxy directly into the crack. Apply in small amounts and use just enough epoxy to bring the epoxy level with the top of the tile along the length of the crack.
The larger the crack, the easier it is to repair, simply because it's easier to get materials into the crack. There are commercial crack fillers/sealers available, but these are usually designed for larger, more open cracks. In addition, the aesthetics of the filled crack will fall short of what would be considered acceptable for concrete countertops.
Polymer-modified cement grout is the typical material used to fill pinholes and voids in concrete countertops during manufacture. If cracks occur before the concrete is sealed, this is often the material used to repair them. It can also be used on larger cracks that occur in installed countertops, provided the crack won't flex or move. Cement grout can be difficult to work into tight hairline cracks, and often only covers the surface of the hairline crack without bonding the concrete together. Cement grout will also need to be sealed to prevent staining, and it is not very flexible, so future cracking could occur.
You find the moths in your pantry because they need a food source, and turns out, they love eating the items you store in your pantry like crackers, pasta, and cookies. They also need a place to reproduce and lay their eggs.
Because of the extreme temperatures inside walk in coolers and freezers, flooring with grout can also compromise the flooring structure over time. Tile and grout typically have different rates of expansion and contraction when exposed to temperature cycling, so when cleaners employ hot water or steam cleaning on cold floors, microcracks can develop between and within grout and tile. These fissures in the floor surface, while often not initially seen, allow moisture to enter and promote the growth of mold and bacteria.
As the water and microbes begin eating away at the flooring material, further degradation can occur, causing larger cracks, popping grout and other issues that compromise the freezer flooring. To prevent any issues with walk-in cooler flooring, a better option is to have resinous floor coatings installed. These virtually seamless, grout-free floors are a highly sanitary option.
do i need to seal zellige tiles? for exterior sealing, clé recommends stonetech heavy duty exterior sealer from laticrete. for glazed zellige with visible crazing, unglazed natural zellige, or if using a contrasting grout, clé recommends sealing with stonetech heavy duty sealer from laticrete as a pre-grout treatment. dry applications of glazed zellige do not require sealing as the final step of installation. for all other sealing and protecting, clé recommends stonetech bulletproof sealer from laticrete. for more information about sealing please see our zellige material guidelines. 2ff7e9595c
